Shading Devices
Shading Devices Overview
* Solar Control and Shading Devices, Olgay
The type of shading devices best suited for a particular façade are determined by the building orientation and cardinal direction.
A northern facing elevation typically does not require shading devices as northern light is a comfortable ambient light – glazing can also be enhanced on the north depending on the climate to bring in balanced daylight.
South elevations require horizontal overhangs to block the harsh sun at high angles during the summer and allow lower angle sun to warm the space in the winter.
East and West Elevations benefit from shading parallel to the windows and angled vertical fins to block harsh light in the morning and evening while allowing some daylight and views.
Shading devices can be fixed elements or operable mechanisms to enhance the architecture.
