Window Detail

Cabin, Laksvatn, Norway.

This unique window and wall detail shows how a window system can be incorporated into the siding and structure of the building using glazing outside of a standard frame. The window opening from the interior has a seamless sill and header, framing the view with little transition.

Sealing the glazing will be crucial as wind driven rain can penetrate into gaps in be introduced into the connection points. Thermal bridging is also a bit of a concern as there is no system in place to separate interior and exterior materials as exists in many high performance window assemblies.

However, this detail really caught my eye with the ingenuity and simplicity in design and construction. The window is part of a whole, not an appendage. Look up the project and see how it appears in elevation and how well the materials on the interior and exterior blend into the window.
